Trips Galore!

In the tradition of Spring and Summer activities, Natalie and I will taking several trips in the upcoming months.

From April 28 - May 2 we will be in Palm Desert (Palm Springs) for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. It features a broad line-up of music artists out the outer-edge of the mainstream. We went in 2004 and had a great time. The biggest complaint was the 9.5 hour drive from Monterey. This year we'll be flying, thankfully. Keep posted for photos, etc.!

And, from May 29 - June 6 we will be vacationing in Kauai at my parent's place. No particular goal other than to unwind, and enjoy some sunshine and each other's company. We last visited Kauai in October, 2004. It was Natalie's first visit, and we both had a fantastic time, aside from her catching a cold/flu/yuckiness towards the end of the trip. This time we'll be loading up on Airborne and vitmain & mineral supplement heavily. Few things are worse than being sick in paradise.

So, we're both super excited about future travel plans. The Monterey fog & rain have been getting me down. I'm sure the 116 degree weather in Palm Desert will cure that!

Cruise Control admin script

Found a nice Wiki entry that detailed a shell script for administering Cruise Control - start, stop, restart, etc. I was using a custom script before which did not provide the stop functionality. I finally got tired of massaging ps to find out the Java process id.

Jakarta Tomcat Database Connection Pooling

I've been working on a new Java web application that will make use of a relational database - MySQL, in this case. I have configured Database Connection Pooling (DBCP) for J2EE applications deployed on Oracle application server instances, but never for Tomcat. The documentation on the Tomcat site was a bit confusing: insert this information in the server.xml file. Okay, but where in the server.xml file? Anyhow, after some Googling I found a good tutorial.

I attempted putting a Context entry in the Tomcat server.xml, but was never able to get the connection pool registered in JNDI. There weren't any entries in the server log indicating a problem with my modifications to the server.xml. I was puzzled.

What eventually worked was placing the Context entry in the ${tomcat}/conf/Catalina/localhost/{app}.xml file. Bang. It worked. I wish that the documentation on the Tomcat website made mention of this file and its capabilities.

Tax Time

It's that time of year, again. I am now facing the ominous chore of having my taxes prepared for 2004. I was self-employed for 6 months while working on a software start-up. Hopefully my dilligence in record-keeping and quarterly estimates will pay off!
